Best Dressed: Palm Springs International Film Festival 2016

The Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) signifies the official start of the much-anticipated awards season – it’s the first among a bevy of other award-giving bodies usually held in Palm Springs, California (of course!) The event always garners a roster of big names and this year was no different with Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Johnny Depp among the night’s honorees.

It also goes without saying that when big movie stars are involved, the red carpet fashion wouldn’t disappoint either and if what we saw during this night was any indication, we’re looking at a colorful red carpet season for the weeks to come!

I know I said there’s going to be lots of color but let’s admit it, there’s always someone who shows up in black and this time surprise surprise, it’s Rooney Mara star of “Carol”. As mush as I love this very “Hepburnesque” Lanvin number, there’s also this tiny part of me wishing that she experiments more with colors this award season but for the mean time, we’ll give her a pass because this look is just too dang cute!

Star of “The Danish Girl” Alicia Vikander is fast-becoming someone to watch not only on screen but on red carpets as well because she keeps it interesting and keeps us guessing with what she will wear next. This Erdem dress I’ll admit disappointed me at first but it grew on me and I love it – it’s a sweet and a proper lady look.

From one up-comer to another, Saoirse Ronan isn’t new to the scene but her turn in “Brooklyn” launches her officially as a Hollywood leading lady and from what it looks like, a style star too! Like Alicia’s, this dress also just grew on me before I appreciated the mix of prints and how age-appropriate and fun it was.

Another breakout actress thanks to her starring role in “Room”, Brie Larson stuns in emerald with a sheath Jason Wu gown which she paired with minimalistic make-up and accessories.

After a bunch of must-watch ingenues, what better way to finish than with the Queen, Cate Blanchett who also stars in “Carol”. We all know that Cate never disappoints on the red carpet because she never plays it safe either – she always shows up decked in works of art only she can pull off. Now, this Marc Jacobs number isn’t one of her riskiest red carpet choice but what I love about this is how she’s channeling Joan Crawford (not sure if it’s intentional or just a coincidence).
